There are many promises to those who
walk in the fear of God. It would do well for us to to know some of
the promises that are ours through the fear of God and to understand
what
it is, how we obtain it, and how we walk in it.
Just because we are believers in God
and Jesus, does not mean that we are walking in the fear of God. Many believers
are missing many blessings in life because they are not walking in the
fear of God.
SOME OF THE PROMISES TO THOSE WHO FEAR GOD
With the many promises to those who
fear God, it would do well for a person to get a concordance and do an
exhaustive study on the subject. However, the inspiration for this message
came from Ps.25.12-15, which makes a good summary of all the promises available
to those who fear God.
"12.What man is he that feareth the
LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. 13.His soul shall
dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.
14.The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him;
and he will shew them his covenant. 15.Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD;
for he shall pluck my feet out of the net."
To note a few things about this passage:
To "dwell at ease" in the Hebrew literally
means "lodge in goodness". This alone covers it all. To dwell at ease in
God's goodness spiritually, mentally, physically, in our family, in our
finances, and in all of our life, speaks of living the "life more abundantly"
through the full salvation that is available through Jesus Christ our Lord.
"And he will shew them his covenant"
can read "and his covenant to make them know it". God says He will teach
us and cause us to know, to be intimately acquainted with, what He has
agreed to do for us. When we know and are convinced of all the goodness
that God has procured toward us, we are bold to step out in faith and receive
all that goodness, and receive all those good things He has secured for
us. This includes forgiveness, fullness of the Spirit with the power of
the supernatural gifts of the Spirit, healing and health, prosperity, family
salvation, and more.
"His seed shall inherit the earth".
The righteous and the meek shall inherit the earth, so this is a specific
promise for household salvation to those who walk in the fear of God.
"He shall pluck my feet out of the
net". The snares of life and of the enemy cannot hold those who walk in
the fear of God. Deliverance in every way is promised to those who fear
God.
Who would not want these benefits
of God operating in their life on a daily basis? Everybody would. So let's
learn how we can walk in the fear of God daily.
WHAT IS THE FEAR OF GOD?
The word in the Hebrew means to be
frightened and to revere. Reverence is to defer to, to give place to with
profound honor and respect. Irreverence is to disrespect and disregard.
One part of our definition then, is to give place to.
God is Spirit. The Holy Spirit is
the person of God with whom we have contact. Another part of our definition
is the Holy Spirit.
God is love (1Jn.4.16), and the connection
we have with God is through faith (Rom.5.1,2). So let's put it all together.
The fear of God is constantly acknowledging
and giving place to the Holy Spirit to be led by Him, so that we are always
living in the love of God, toward God and toward all people, and always
believing God's Word of promise, so that we are always affirming and demonstrating
the Word of truth of all the good things that we presently have in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
This is truly giving place
to and reverencing God. This is the fear of God.
HOW DO WE OBTAIN THE FEAR OF GOD?
We obtain the fear of God by listening
to God. God is in the teaching business. He comes to us and speaks to our
innermost man, our spirit man, to convince us of things about ourselves
and about Himself, so that we can come to a place of fellowshipping with
Him on a constant basis so we can be receiving all the good things He wants
to give to us. If we will listen, if we will give place to Him and not
be rebellious and independent, but be doing what He says to do, we are
living in the fear of God.
Sin separates us from God. Being separated
from God in eternity is hell. God has dealt with sin by giving His own
Son as a sacrifice to put away sin. Through the blood sacrifice of His
own Son, Jesus Christ, our sin and shame has already been put away. God
teaches us to receive His provision for becoming one with Him. God teaches
us to lay our sin, our shame, our burdens, our pride, our mistakes, our
rebellion and independence down before Him, along with our destiny of hell,
and exchange our life for His life. His life is love, joy, peace, forgiveness,
righteousness, power in the Holy Spirit, healing and health, and eternal
life in heaven with Him forever. All this is given to us as a gift. It
is some of what God has provided for us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
By listening to God teach us, and
by coming to Jesus and trusting what He has done for us, we are giving
place to God, we are reverencing God, we are obtaining and walking in the
fear of God, hence, we are giving place to the Holy Spirit. This is what
we are to show and teach others for them to duplicate in their lives.
HOW DO WE WALK IN THE FEAR OF GOD?
"As ye have therefore received Christ
Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: rooted and built up in him, and stablished
in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving"
(Col.2.6,7). By continuing to live our daily life listening to God teach
us of Jesus, believing and praising God for all that we have in Jesus,
then we are walking in the fear of God.
The Spirit is the Teacher. The more
we give place to the Spirit, the more we walk in the fear of God.
Going back to our definition of the
fear of God, the more we give place to the Spirit, the more love we have
because "the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost
which is given to us" (Rom.5.5). Giving place to the Spirit by praying
in the Spirit builds us up on our most holy faith, and it keeps us in the
love of God (Jude 20,21). This is the importance of being baptized in the
Holy Spirit and yielding to the Spirit to pray in tongues and move in the
gifts of the Spirit. These are the grace of God to enable us to walk in
the fullness of the fear of God.
The Spirit leads us into all truth
by illuminating the Word for us so that the Word of God becomes our staff
of life. The Word becomes central and supreme in our life, the final authority
on all issues great or small.
By continually giving place to the
Holy Spirit, the Word and the Spirit work together to magnify Jesus in
our lives to show Him as Lord over all.
This is walking in the fear of God.
