We ask "why?" in hard times. There are many things we might not understand, but there are some basic principles that we are given to understand.
First, and foundational, we need to
understand that God is good, the devil is bad. God does not afflict
and torment. The devil does.
"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, to kill, and to destroy:
I am come that they might have life, and that they might have
it more abundantly." John 10.10
Next, we need to understand that we
are given responsibility of government in the affairs of life here
on earth, including governing our own personal lives. In other words, the
choices we make will govern the outcome of our lives. Good choices will
bring good results, bad choices will bring bad results.
"And God said, Let us make man in our own image, after
our likeness: and let them have dominion..." Genesis 1.26
Right along with this is the principle
of sowing and reaping. What we sow, we reap. This principle affects every
realm of life.
Next, we need to understand that a
lack
of knowledge is an open door to the destructive power of the elements
and of the enemy.
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because
thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that
thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the
law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." Hosea 4.6
This is an Old Testament expression
of how ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance of the Word and ways of
God robs us of God's blessings.
Next, we need to understand that God
will carry us at length in love, mercy, and in protective power, but
there reaches a point when we must grow up and bear some responsibility
for our life. He will give us Word and enlightenment repeatedly, covering
us, giving us ample time to turn from our ways to conform to His ways.
When we refuse to go in His way of abundant life and deliverance, and we
choose our own way, walking out of the covering of God, then we
walk into the devices of the enemy. God doesn't just "allow" evil
to come on us. We make choices that opens the door to that evil. Job had
to repent in dust and ashes for some of the attitudes and choices he made
before he received deliverance.
In other words, God feeds us knowledge
and expects us to embrace and grow up in that knowledge. If we refuse,
He is not responsible for the outcome.
"God...exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in
the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them
out of it. And about the time of forty years suffered he their
manners in the wilderness...he...destroyed seven nations...
gave unto them judges...God gave unto them Saul...removed...
found David...of this man's seed...raised...a Savior, Jesus"
Acts 13.17-23
In this scripture we see how God carried
and provided for His people right on up to the revelation of Jesus Christ.
The term "suffered he their manners" in the Hebrew language, according
to the center reference in my Bible, carries the idea of God bearing His
people and feeding them as a nurse feeds an infant. The idea is conveyed
to us that God provided even more than He really wanted to for His people.
He didn't want to give them a king in the person of Saul. He knew that
would not be the best thing for them, but He respected their choice. Then,
after it did not work out, with the people suffering the consequences of
their choice, God gave them king David to deliver them.
In short, the principle we see here,
again, is that if we refuse to grow up, bent on doing our own thing,
refusing the knowledge of God, then God is not responsible for the mess
we get ourselves into.
"Why!" we scream, we cry, and we moan.
If we will be honest with ourselves, we can go to God's Word and find the
answer. We can learn how we have refused God's ways, and have chosen our
own ways, and are suffering the consequences of it.
God's way is the way of faith
in the Word of God, walking in love, and being sensitive to be led by the
Holy Spirit. It was unbelief that caused the children to walk in
lovelessness and die in the wilderness. It was the unbelief of not discerning
God's Word regarding health and relationships, that caused the Corinthians
to be weak and sickly and die prematurely. Today, the same applies to us.
Just because we are doing our own "good thing", does not mean it is the
"God thing" by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
"For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear
of the Lord: they would none of my counsel: they despised all
my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own
way, and be filled with their own devices." Proverbs 1.29-31
Suffering because we are outside God's
will is different from suffering in the will of God. Paul suffered a lot,
but he knew exactly why, and he rejoiced in the midst of that suffering.
The good news for us today is this:
"But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall
be quiet from fear of evil." Proverbs 1.33
If we will turn from our ways,
and turn to Jesus for abundant life--for forgiveness, for healing, for
restoration, and for eternal life--then our "whys" can be turned to "wonderfuls",
as we see the wonders of God's love and compassion deliver us from
the tight clutches of the enemy, who is hell-bent on destroying us.
We have the choice and responsibility
to learn the truth of God's ways and line our lives us to His provisions
for deliverance and abundant life. We do this through knowledge of and
faith in the Word of God. This is believing on Jesus Christ.
If we really want to know "Why?",
we can turn to Jesus, the Living Word, with all our life, and walk in the
ways of God, and understand, and dwell safely, and be quiet from fear of
evil.
