Neglect

Here’s you a good way to start the New Year off right—make the determination to be diligent to maintain your vehicle. The older the vehicle, the more diligent and frequent should be the “check-ups.” It’s time for “True Confessions.” Going down the interstate from Little Rock, I start hearing a strange noise coming from under the hood. The red oil light comes on. Folks, when the red oil light comes on, it’s time to pull over right then. Well, it was getting dark. I did not want to pull over on the interstate, so I went a little piece down the road to the exit onto the service road. The service road at that point had steel posts right up close to the road. I didn’t want be stuck out in the service road. I went on for a little piece and saw an apron up ahead— “If I can just get to that apron!” By this time the pop-pop-popping sound from under the front hood had increased.  I made it to the apron and pulled over onto it. I would say all this happened within about a mile. I popped the hood and got out and looked it over. I checked the oil—none shown. I re-checked it—none shown. Third time—none shown. “Drats! I can’t believe I have allowed this to happen!” I said to myself. “Well, maybe it’s not as bad as I think.” I called my wife, who I knew was coming back to Benton from visiting her sister. I asked her to bring me four quarts of oil. She did. I put three of them in. Started driving home with it sounding normal. No oil light. Then it began to start in again the same way. Oil light came on. I got home. Took it to the mechanic after the week-end. Verdict: “Internal damage. Seal leaking. New motor needed.” Had I been paying closer attention! Had I responded more quickly to stop! Now, there is loss because of neglect and inattention. In all of it I was reminded of the scripture that says, “Neglect”— “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation…spoken by the Lord, and…by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness both with signs…wonders…miracles…gifts of the Holy Ghost…?” (Hebrews 2:1-4). Yes, I will be more diligent with my vehicle. I will be more diligent with the vehicle of my physical body. But with all, I will be more diligent to not neglect what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for me to save me, to heal me, and to set me free in every way. Neglect brings loss. You might want to open your Bible and read that passage in Hebrews and be encouraged to be more diligent in every way. Neglecting and not paying attention to what angels, apostles, the Lord, and God Himself has spoken to us, will bring loss. My choice is to believe what God says, and always prosper in His loving favor.
