Someone Left the Gate Open

I have this birthday card sitting on my desk. It is a favorite of mine. The picture on the front shows a green lawn in front of a white house with lattice around the bottom of the front porch. A little light tan colored dog, about twenty pounds size, is shown making a leaping run across the lawn. He is in mid-air with his little floppy ears extended upward, his mouth open with tongue showing, and his front paws are extended forward in his joyous leap forward. This little fellow is showing the total exhilaration of unbridled freedom. The message of the card inside says, “Live life like someone left the gate open! Happy Birthday.” I enjoy just sitting at my desk and looking at this little guy, first, because he looks very similar to Willy, my little tan-colored terrier-like dog, that passed in July of last year. The little dog on the card also reflects the same somewhat reckless enthusiasm for life that Willy had. Once, at Degray Lake, while walking Willy and Waylon, his brother, I tried to coax them into the water. Willy took a wild leap into the water and promptly sank, with me providing a quick rescue. Waylon never would jump in. So, I coined their names Wild Willy and Wary Waylon. Those names reflected their life-long personalities. Waylon is still alive, and he is still the same wary Waylon that he has always been. But the third reason I like the card is because it, visually and in word, inspires me to live life with unbridled enthusiasm. In the Lord Jesus Christ, the gate has been opened. Every provision for a full, happy, healthy life has been provided in Christ. He has paid the price, and He has put it in place, just for me to obtain it and enjoy it. I could be like a little doggie that has been beaten around the ears and taught that an open gate is not for me to go through; that kind of freedom is not for us today. With that teaching, even with the gate being open, I could just sit there in my “beliefs,” and never experience the great freedom that is rightfully mine. No, the good news is that Jesus has paid the price for our freedom in every way—spirit, soul, body, financially, in family, and in eternity. The good news is that the gate has been opened. The blood of Jesus to take our sins away, the beating Jesus took to heal our sickness, the anointing of Jesus so we can be filled with His power—He has put every provision in place for our blessing and deliverance in every way. We are blessed “with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). That is our spiritual bank account to draw on by faith, for blessings in every realm of our life. That is our open gate. Let’s not just sit there and look at it! Go for it!
