When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time alone in the woods. After my work was done around the house and the farm, I had time to kill. I would grab my twenty-gauge shotgun and slip my red rubber boots on and head to the woods. One thing I would do when squirrel season was not in, was to walk through the woods and look for dead trees. When I would find a standing dead sapling or small tree, I would lay my shotgun aside, and grab the tree and shake it. The tree would be anywhere from two or three inches at the base up to maybe six or so inches. It was dead and rotten, but still standing. When I would shake it hard enough, it would move back and forth at the top until it would break. Now, when you shook it, you never knew exactly how, where, or when it was going to break. You never knew if it was going to come down right on top of you or off to one side. Once it broke, you had a split second to make your move in the right direction to avoid being hit. I don’t ever recall being hit in the head while engaged in such a sport, but that lack of recall might be because maybe I did get hit in the head (humor). I have spent hours being entertained by the somewhat dangerous challenge of shaking rotten trees. That’s sort of like the sport I also have had of stirring up a wasp’s nest with a two-foot long, inch and a half wide wooden slat in my hand to swat the wasps before they could sting me. If I hit a wasp, that was a point for me. If a wasp stung me, that was a point for them. I’ve been told I was a “weird duck.” But here is something really weird. For a person to know that the wages of sin are death and destruction, but to keep doing it anyway! And then it gets even more weird than that. For a person to be told the solution to be free from sin and have the power to overcome sin, and refuse to take that solution! Now that is weird! To keep shaking the tree of life, knowing in a split second you can get hit in the head and you be in eternity before an absolutely holy God, and you have sin all over you! That is crazy! People do it every day. Believers play with sin every day, knowing it will come down on you in a moment. Strange sport! Jesus was crucified and took our sins to the cross. He is the solution. Repent and let Him have your sins. He was resurrected to give you the power of the Spirit to overcome sin. Don’t play with sin and shake the tree down on you! Walk in the Spirit! Live safe and free in Jesus!
