When the Flood Rolls In

We live by a creek at the lowest point of the surrounding elevated areas. We have a large, level, lawn. With the recent heavy rains, at midnight we looked outside and watched a two-foot river sweep across our property. The creek swelled and water from the elevated areas around us came rolling to us. It comes up quick and it goes down quick, but this last flood was deeper than we have seen in the seven years of being here. I got out in it to rescue a few items in the yard. We lost a few items that were swept away. In the days following we cleaned things up. There was two feet of debris accumulated on the backside of the rose bushes. There was debris that accumulated around the AC unit and other areas. It was not until a few days later that I was walking the yard and noticed the bamboo fence we had built across the back of our property. Looking straight at it you would not see the damage. As I was off to one side and looking across the yard, my eye caught the fence. I walked over to it on one end to see how two feet of water accumulating on the back side had pushed it over somewhat. It was about one and a half feet out of plumb at the top. It was in the middle of the fence that is just over one hundred feet long. The debris had accumulated on the backside which stopped up the flow underneath. The water built up and pushed it over some. Had we not sunk those posts as deep in the ground as we did, and concreted them in, it would have laid the whole fence over. I have a plan on how to repair it and have it ready for the next onslaught. We will get it done soon. It is so important to have our lives deeply planted in the Word of God and reinforced by the Spirit of God. The floods in life will come. If we are not grounded in the promises of God and exercised in believing those promises, our fence can be swept over. There are promises for every area of our life. It takes work and experience to get them planted deep within us so they become a part of us. Once we learn to trust God’s Word, with every storm we learn how to trust Him even more. We learn how we can bolster our life up to prepare us for the next storm. God is faithful to His Word. His Spirit is faithful to help us and guide us. As we spend the time with Him, seeking His face and hearing from Him, we are able to “build the fence” to withstand the storm. What Christ has done for us is settled. We can rest in His love for us. We can know because of Him, we can withstand the storms that assault us.
